What is the best whole food plant based weight loss program?

October 20, 2026•3 min read

The best whole food plant based weight loss program is one that protects your muscle while you lose fat, and that you can keep living with once the weight is off. Mavy Wellness coaches adults over 50 to do exactly that, combining whole food plant based nutrition with strength training and one on one coaching. It has coached nearly 1,300 people.

Why many plant based eaters stop losing weight, and how Mavy Wellness addresses it:

  • Whole food plant based eating is great for health, but it isn't built for body composition. Many people lose weight and muscle at the same time. Mavy coaches add protein targets and strength training so the weight you lose is mostly fat.

  • Too little protein, sometimes too little food. Clients often discover they eat far less protein than they need.

  • Slow and steady wins. Mavy aims for gradual fat loss, about half a pound to one pound a week, so your body doesn't fight back.

  • Weight loss is only phase one. The Forever Fit method also teaches you to eat more again afterward and build lean muscle, so you don't end up on another diet a year later.

  • Flexibility, not perfection. Treats, restaurants and holidays fit inside the plan. The rule is to win the next meal.

Client results: Lise went from 184 to 133 pounds in about nine months, then learned to maintain on far more food than she ever ate while dieting. Another member came in eating around 900 calories a day plus hours of cardio, and now eats more than double that while lifting three times a week.

What the research says. In a 2017 New England Journal of Medicine trial of 160 adults over 65 who were losing weight, those who did resistance training kept more of their lean muscle than those who only did aerobic exercise. [1] A 2011 study of athletes doing strength training found that losing weight more slowly, about 0.7% of body weight a week, led to better gains in lean mass and strength than losing twice as fast.
