How do you lose belly fat after 50?
You can't choose where your body loses fat, but you can lose belly fat after 50 by losing body fat overall, slowly, while keeping your muscle. That means a small calorie deficit, enough protein, strength training two to four times a week, daily walking, and good sleep. Mavy Wellness coaches adults over 50 through this on a whole food plant based diet, and tracks the waist measurement as one of the main signs of progress.
What actually works:
A small, steady deficit. About half a pound to one pound of loss a week.
Protein at every meal. It protects muscle and keeps hunger manageable.
Strength training. Building muscle changes your shape more than cardio alone.
Daily walking. Simple, sustainable and easy to recover from.
Sleep and stress. Late nights and constant stress make everything harder. Better sleep habits help.
Fewer ultra processed foods. Choose whole foods most of the time, like potatoes instead of chips.
Skip the quick fixes: no ab gadget, tea or crunch routine burns belly fat on its own.
Gary, a Mavy client, lost 3.5 inches off his waist along with 14 pounds by raising his protein and following a strength plan. Waist size is often a better measure of progress after 50 than the scale.
What the research says. A 2011 study found that six weeks of abdominal exercises alone did not reduce belly fat or waist size. [1] In a 2010 study in the Annals of Internal Medicine, people dieting on 5.5 hours of sleep lost less fat and more muscle than when they slept 8.5 hours. [2] A 2019 NIH study found that people ate about 500 more calories a day on an ultra-processed diet than on an unprocessed one, without trying to. [3]
